Acklam kick off down the hill on a freezing day with gusts of snow dancing around the pitch. Early breaks though from Trimdon and in the first minute a good break on goal from Jack Fannan tests their keeper. Minutes later and a great clearance from big Adam Foston fires through for another run and shot on goal by Jack but saved again by the Acklam keeper. We played these lads last season and we weren’t in their league then but it seems a different world today with Trimdon mounting a lot of attacking football and getting good shots away, Acklam just don’t seem to be able to get hold of the game and the Trimdon defence work well to fend off anything they do try – Lanky doing his usual strong tackling to good effect. 10 minutes in and yet another attack from Trimdon with Ryan and Josh working well to get the ball to Jack who shoots again just wide. More attacks from Jack and great effort from Josh is luckily collected by their keeper. From the return ball Acklam knock it long and score a decent goal against the run of play. This spurs Trimdon into action and again Jack forges forward with the ball and has a great run past 2 players but shoots at the keeper – unlucky. The game seems pretty even from here and it is a bit surprising that from only 2 more shots in the half Acklam score 2 more goals to make it 3 goals from 3 shots whilst Trimdon have peppered their goal for no reward – it’s a funny old game. Just before the end of the half Tom Lawson flights a great ball to Tom Summerbell who fires hard at the keeper then blasts the rebound off the post and out of play. Second half and Trimdon now have the higher ground attacking down hill but the cause isn’t helped by losing Jack Fannan to injury – we are already down by our captain and centre forward having lost Sam Noble to a rugby injury. But Shaun Swan comes on and makes a good early impression getting stuck right in. It’s all Trimdon in the second half and acklam don’t look comfortable until a 35 yard long range effort from them sails in to go 4 up – a goal from nowhere. 20 minutes in and Shaun , Luke Casson and Caspar work the ball well to keep attacking the goal but still no joy and the ball sails wide of the goal again. More attacks coming down the right side and Luke / Caspar seem to work well together to forge 3 or 4 attempts on goal. With 10 minutes left it doesn’t look like it’s going to be our day but the lads don’t stop or give in and when Tom Lawson puts the ball onto Louie’s foot on the 18 yard line he powers a drive toward the top corner but once again the keeper saves it. The Acklam lads haven’t bothered Lee Jackson in goal this half since the massive strike and he could be forgiven for falling asleep but he springs into action to save 2 sharp efforts in the last five minutes. Final minute and Lanky, committed as ever, bundles someone over in the box and they get a penalty but they don’t convert it and the game ends 4 – 0 to them. If games were won on possession and effort then Trimdon would have walked away with it but it goals that count – looking forward to the return leg. MOM from their coach was Lanky. MOM from report – no-one had a bad game but it was between Luke Casson who had great second half and Tom Summerbell making a welcome return to the team and it’s Tom that shades it for his attacking performance.
